This was not a shave as we visualize today, with foam from a can and a plastic disposable razor. Rather, the lather was applied with a brush and a straight razor was utilized. It appears menacing, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever be given. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so pleasant. The men would mostly talk about baseball or local politics, though the matter of women would come up a great deal. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a little better. Today, when you get a haircut the chatter is kept to a minimum and you often try to get out as soon as possible. As I stroll by the local barber shop and spot the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I speculate why this custom has mostly disappeared from our customs.
