When you end a round having 5 or more cards remaining in the stack, you do gain extra lives. Checking out the timepiece I found out is this gameplay does push you to keep on going. Advancing in rounds enables you to open new card decks and backgrounds in the game, so you won't have to glance at the same screen for a long time.
