A Health Instructor Instructs Her Pupils About The Important Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the largest private high school in the state. Even though she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already obtained a reputation as an educator with instructional approaches that motivated and encouraged her pupils to think and to learn.

For instance, one Wednesday morning at 10:00 she addressed the pupils in her classroom and announced the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a general standpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably reveal that an individual with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that an individual exhibits, the more likely it is that he or she is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."

Miss Jackson then explained to the members in the class that each pupil would be held responsible for examining three alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the class via a nine minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to study the list and rank the top five alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After about twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the pupils in her class that after she tallies the results, she will present her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told the pupils in her class to go over the information on the piece of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 40 or 50 seconds, almost every student in the class raised his or her hand. It was clear to see that the pupils had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, virtually every pupil disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, namely, "Do you feel awfully sick when you refrain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then informed the pupils in her class why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcohol addiction. She pointed out that the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

In effect this means that when an alcoholic abruptly quits drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcoholic, the pupils started to appreciate the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson realized that she had inspired and stimulated the students in her classroom to stop and think about a vital social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
